About

Sgoolai Israel Synagogue

We are an unaffiliated Community located at 168 Westmorland Street in Downtown Fredericton.   Our roots date back to 1896 when the first Jewish family arrived in Fredericton.   Our Community was founded mainly by East European immigrants arriving in the early 1900’s.   We have both an active Board and Sisterhood who maintain the operations and activities of the Synagogue. We also have ties with World Wizo (Women’s International Zionist Organization). Through our membership in the Atlantic Jewish Council,we keep in close contact with the other small communities throughout Atlantic Canada.

Our warm and friendly membership currently consists of over 50 families who form an integral part of the Greater Fredericton community.  Members lead contemporary Canadian lifestyles, contributing to the local business, educational and arts communities.  We have always welcomed new people to our community and have helped them adjust to their new home.  In recent years we have partnered with the Provincial Government in encouraging immigration to our Picturesque City.

As a small community we strive to respect the different backgrounds within our membership.  To accommodate the varied needs, our Synagogue has three seating sections (offering family seating as well as separate men’s and women’s seating).

Shabbat services are currently held each Friday evening at 6:30 pm and Saturday morning at 9:30 am led by Rabbi Yosef Goldman.
(The Rabbi can be reached by phone: 476-6345 or e-mail: r.y.g.5774@gmail.com)

We offer a pre-school program for younger children and an after-school program for older children.  Group and/or tutorial adult educational classes can be organized in religion/prayer, Halacha, Hebrew and biblical history by request.

Whether you are new to the City, just passing through or extending your stay in Fredericton, we would be delighted to meet you.  If you would like more information please see our Contact Page.
